All centres have help from volunteer tutors/mentors to support pupils learning. They come with a wide range of skills and experience and from a variety of backgrounds and bring with them a range of experience making a real difference to the way in which centres deliver the P fS curriculum.

The tutor/mentor's role can be wide-ranging, from supporting small groups or individual pupils with specific tasks, assisting pupils in personal target setting and recording learning gains.  Some have specific roles such as developing the centre's website and following up pupil progress back in school. Some centres encourage and prepare pupils to return as peer tutors/mentors through a graduate PfS programme, and some have accreditation in place for their tutors/mentors.

Staff Quotes:

What I get out of it.

First and foremost, I have a great time at the centre. Tuesday evenings have become the highlight of my week. I probably smile and laugh more on that one night than I do for the rest of my working week. The activities are always interesting, the atmosphere pleasant and the people wonderful.

Secondly, the SSC is as much a learning environment for me, as for the young people. I learn ever more about working with young people, how to interact with them, how to help them, how to teach them. I learn teaching techniques through observation of, and discussion with, experienced professionals. I learn to work according to the needs of individuals, and also how to devise/plan inclusive group activities. I learn with each new child, mentor or teacher I meet to adapt to a new way of thinking.
